Our own galaxy, the Milky Way

This shape and the approximate placement of our own Sun within it has been based on the latest findings by NASA's IR Spitzer telescope in 2005. Spitzer, by seeing Infra Red light was finally able to view through the dust clouds that had been obscuring the center of the galaxy and prevented astronomers, using visual light optical telescopes from seeing the galactic center.
