Over all, I found the deprivation and poverty much worse than expected. This place has the resouces to be a wealthy country. The government's fear of Western influence, used to keep Burma secluded, IMO is more a fear of loosing their death-grip on the absolute power they think they have over this wonderful people. The Buddhist monks, so far still non-combative, are the only counter force here, and are as much loathed and feared by the government as they are loved by the Burmese people. |
