The Krak was rebuilt in the 11th century by the Hospitaller Knights, who also added the outer wall around the castle. The castle held up to 1000 knights, their horses, and retainers. It was never sacked, and could have withstood any siege for five years or more. At the end of the crusades, the fortress was finally traded away for passage for all of the inhabitants to the coast, and their unhindered return to Europe. |
