Spain 2001

Ávila

Just a short train ride from Madrid is Ávila in the province of Castile and Leon, built in the 11th Century and known for it's great walls

But wait! There is something else and unexpected here

Yes, you're right. Those are storks. Lots of them with nests about anywhere high up

Like take this construction crane. Now defunct because it's stork nesting season

Here's that whole city gate that is occupied by storks

Toledo

Another day trip took me to Toledo in the province of Castile - La Mancha

Toledo overlooks the Tagus River and was occupied by the Romans in 192 BC and called Toletum, what's more, following its recapture by the Christian knights in 1085 AD, it was the capital of the Spanish Empire until the mid 16th Century, when the royal court moved to Madrid

Castillo de San Servando - began as a monastery and later was occupied by the Knights Templar

A Knights Templar display

A Moorish gate

Museum of Santa Cruz

Now a museum, but once the Holy Cross Hospital

Narrow, colorful and shaded alleys

A bride was modeling her gown in front of an old fountain
