Just a short train ride from Madrid is Ávila in the province of Castile and Leon, built in the 11th Century and known for it's great walls |
But wait! There is something else and unexpected here |

Toledo
Another day trip took me to Toledo in the province of Castile - La Mancha |
Toledo overlooks the Tagus River and was occupied by the Romans in 192 BC and called Toletum, what's more, following its recapture by the Christian knights in 1085 AD, it was the capital of the Spanish Empire until the mid 16th Century, when the royal court moved to Madrid |
Castillo de San Servando - began as a monastery and later was occupied by the Knights Templar |
