Italy 2001
Palermo
Selinunte

Another train ride got me near to this place. After my experience, cool as it might have been, I'd recommend taking a tour bus from Palermo (or rent a car). Access to, and getting around the sites themselves is lengthy and tiring, to put it mildy. |

The first thing I saw were immense piles of broken pillars. |

You can see from the occasional persons traveling there on their own, as I did, how massive these structures are |

At the time I was there in 2001, only this one, the temple of Hera, had been reconstructed |

As you can see, work is ongoing, but slow, costly, and tedious |

There are four major piles like this, all of them 3D jigsaw puzzles |

At one time there were five temples in this location, and by 2001 one of them had been reconstructed. There is work here for many decades. Computerization has helped in recent years. What they do now is scan the pieces, as best as possible, then try to fit them together in a specialized 3D CAD application. Of course, scanning these multi-ton fragments in itself is a huge task. |
