Germany 2001
Haithabu/Hedeby
When I was at the Copenhagen Viking Museum in 2001, I saw this replica being built. It and others from different locations came to a Viking meeting at Haithabu in 2012. That would have been an event to witness. |
In 1980, Denmark issued this stamp |
Not all Viking ships were war vessels with square sails, oars and shields, some were trading ships, like this one |
Scientists in the museum were trying to reassemble an excavated longboat, using a new frame for the ancient planks |
They had this part of the longboat built to scale, because that part was not recoverable |
The whole assmbly will go something like this, merging old and new pars for a big display - I do not know if they completed it since I saw it |
Swords that must have belonged to wealthier Viking warriors |
An outstanding render by science illustrator Jochen Stuhrmann (possibly using Cinema 4D) that I linked to his Website |
Some fine examples of Viking jewelry Unfortunately, the camera lens slipped on the glass |
A parting look from the Shield Wall giving an idea of the scale of this settlement |
