Basilica Cathedral De St Denis
The market at St Denis. I buy fruit there to keep me going |
This is a fantastic destination, too often overlooked by tourists. Take Metro M1 at the Louvre or Tuileries to Concorde, take M12 to Saint Lazare. There get on M13 to the Universite. You get off one stop before you get to the university. If you go too far, go back one stop and get off at Basilique De Saint Denis. It's one of the most important Gothic churches in France. Built between 1136-1286. |
Gargoyles of the Cathedral of St Denis - find the kiosk, there is a fee, and times of admission are at this link |
What you will find, once you get admission to the Basilica |
Nearly every king, queen, and major noble of France is entombed here |
Most of the men are girded with sword and shield, and often the women have little dogs at their feet |
And excavations are still ongoing for remains of the orginal church of Abbé Suger. At this cathedral you will find the transition from Romanic to Gothic style. |
