Arles

Arles in Roman times, and when you step outside of the museum, you will see the curved end of the mostly buried circus, the race track
The city's wealth and power depended on Roman technology, merchant traffic, and the might of the Roman legions. This display shows the Rhone River bridge that could be opened in two places accommodates merchant ships and probably military vessels, too.

Carvings depict the chariot races that went on in Arles and give on an indication of the wealth and status of the city

But it did not end there. The city also sported a very fine arena, large enough to seat 21000 spectators

And here's the real thing, restored and still in use for concerts and bull fights
With a Roman theater right next door, also still in use
