Caen
Caen, a place well remembered by WW2 veterans, was my target for one thing, I wanted to see WIlliam the Bastard's Castle. Not a particularly derogatory description, because it just denoted one's heritage. Later, after the invasion of England, that was changed to 'Conqueror'. His father, Robert the Devil, found a local tanner's daughter to his liking. And who'd refuse the Duke of Normandy? William was the offspring of that long term union. This was not the castle where William grew up, btw. It was built while he ruled England. Here, the Church of Saint Pierre, near the castle. |
The Caen Castle is one of the largest medieval enclosures in Europe. Built in 1060. A symbol of the power of the Dukes of Normandie |

Inside there is a chapel, inner keep with walls and towers, great views of Caen |
