Amgen Tour of California 2010

Auburn - Stage 1

These guys just did 30-plus miles, and they are just getting warmed up

Two who need few words of introduction: Lance Armstrong, chatting and laughing with Mark Cavendish (Great Britain), who is not only one of the most successful sprinters of the day, but is developing quite a reputation, as well. Unfortunately, neither of these two star riders made it to the finish because of en-route mishaps. In case of Lance, a bloody cut next to his left eye from his second crash of the tour that occurred during stage 6 and which prompted a quick trip to the hospital..

I probably was briefly caught on the big screens, by the helmet cam of this photographer

Of the four cyclists in this picture, Jens Voight, Ger, on the far left, is the only one who is still in the race at the end of stage 7. He is one of the better known riders who is in 4th place overall, behind Levi Leipheimer.

58 WYNANTS Maarten, Belgium, 44 QUINZIATO Manuel, It, 116 Dropped out, 27 BRESCHEL Matti, Den, 5 MCCARTNEY Jason, USA

And they're on their way to Sacramento, about 80 or so miles away.

A Quick Footnote

44 out of 128 riders dropped out, which is a testament to the difficulty of this 8-day event. These are among the world's best riders and manage to make it look easy, but it is definitely anything but. Levi Leipheimer did not win this year, but came in third.
