Dubai

Hitting the ground running, I took the metro from Al Rigga Station and exited at the World Trade Center and walked toward the beach. It was still hot, but I knew that it was a far cry from the heat of summer and being too cheap to take a cab, I walked and in some Indian minimart bought a bottle of water instead and chatted with the owner, a 3rd generation immigrant to Dubai. I then kept walking until I got to the road along the ocean. I had stopped to buy a hat, having lost mine in Mongolia, and then found out that buses can't be boarded anywhere, but that you had to prepurchase tickets. So I had a couple of miles to walk in the heat, along the walls the kept me, the sole walker, from the water. Behind those walls were warfs, drydocks, gas and oil terminals, and other shoreside installations. Finally, I arrived at a much more friendly and interesting area, and after a superb dinner in a seafood restaurant, also frequented by the Emir of Dubai, made it to the beach. Then came the long trek back to the metro station, but at least it was getting cooler by then. When I arrived back at the hotel it was dark.

After walking for a couple of hours, misled by a tourist map in the wrong direction, the dock security supervisor, a native Arab, kindly pointed me in the right direction, and it was a long hot walk back, since the buses could not be used w/o a ticket

However, while unable to use the buses, I walked from one busstop to the next and since in Dubai, they were airconditioned oases, I was able to cool down in them and rest upfor the next leg of the trek.

Some government leader's grand villa on the beach

Right next to the Grand Mosque, one of the best restaurants in town, and without challenge, the best seafood restaurant in Dubai. They have history here and even the Emir eats there, at times. You owe yourself a visit to this establishment, when in town.

The service is as excellent as the food is delicious

And this is just what's set up while you're waiting for your order.
Near the restaurant, on the opposite side of the avenue, there are streets leading to the beach

Keep in mind, that once, the desert simply ran to the sea. This is not Hawaii and the humidity is correspondingly low

I saw her trying to take her own photo and offered to help, then asked if I might take one, she happily obliged

On the way to the metro, past the restaurant, I spotted what seemed to be a very old-style dome, and this one was a beauty
