Babur's Gardens

Established in the 16th Century, and resting place of the first Mughal Emperor, Babur, this is like the Kabul's citizens' 'Fortress of Solitude'. A place of peace and quiet and nature that is in stark contrast with the hustle and bustle and noise of the city. I 'stitched' two photos that I took from the top of the tower of the Noon Guns together, not perfectly, but enough to show you the complete spread of the gardens with the important structures at the top (the left in the picture) and the entrance and event site at the right, where some merchants are permitted to display their wares.

In addition to the Mughal Emperor (above), other members of his family are buried here

The Entrance to Baburs Gardens
You can find all sorts of locally crafted jewelry here among the displays of various merchants
Looks like a boys' afternoon out, while the women are either shopping or getting dinner ready
Like Kabul, the gardens are a place for moderates and traditional Muslims, as well as for tourists
Be they lovers or some who think they should be, all find a great place to be at peace here in this great natural environment
Some kids brought blankets and what seem to be home-made board games

Once, before the fighting of 1992/3, the gardens consisted of massive trees. Luckily, by now, over the last 10 years or more, it has been lovingly replanted and rebuilt.
The caravanserai building, built above what was thought to be an old caravanserai

Some of the channels of the irrigation canals on the property. Great places to play in, and the life-line for the garden.
