Chartres

I may have read about Chartres in Ken Follet's book, Pillars of the Earth, or it was recommended somewhere, and it's not far, so I went.

Walking down the narrow streets I suddenly saw this place. The food looked delicious and pure French. I had to stop in, but they were actually just closing. They're open just two or three times a day, and strictly takeout, although there was one small stand-up table.
It's owned and run by a local couple, very friendly, speak some English, and were the kindest and most welcoming people I've met in a long time. He prepared some food for me that I ate on the steps of the cathedral, that was absolutely the best I've had in France, maybe in Europe.
For those less adventurous and better heeled, there is an alternative, like everything, also near the Cathedral, the oldest restaurant in Chatres. Clearly lacking the coins (and hair), these fine things are typically out of my price range. C'est la vie.
