Mycenae, Greece 2001

From this reconstruction you will recognize some of the features of this fabulous pre-Hellenic site. The Lions Gate is at the lower left, to get you situated. The link (click on this image) will take you to some of the treasures that had been recovered from this site, including the famous golden mask of Agamemnon. I went to see those items, which are now located in the Athens Archeological Museum..

To get you oriented right. Here you are looking toward the circular royal tomb from above. The Lions Gate is at right.

The Lions, or rather Lionesses. The Myceneans knew very well that the lionesses are the ferocious ones.

By now you will have noticed an almost 'melting' of the stones for a perfect fit. Not a knife blade would fit.

Beate, my little Polish travel buddy, who lives in Canada, points at a drain hole, useless for anyone trying to breach this wall.

Going deep into one of the tunnels that the ancient occupants had chiseled into the rock.
